Nepalnews said that, at least 13 people, including four children, have died and scores of people – some unconfirmed reports claiming up to 600 - have gone missing when a suspension bridge on the Bheri River at Mehalkuna in Surkhet district collapsed Tuesday afternoon.
The people had plunged into the river when the bridge collapsed due to overload at around 13:45 pm. The bridge was overcrowded as hundreds of people were passing through it to participate in a local fair nearby.
Rescuers have recovered 13 bodies so far and the search for other missing people continues. Eight dead bodies were found at the incident site and four others were found on the riverbanks some three kilometers away.
Rescue teams helped some 40 people swim ashore while other 150 are said to have swum on their own. Reports say 20 injured persons have been taken to Surkhet hospital for treatment.
Officials of the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police and Nepal Red Cross Society along with the local people have been mobilised for rescue works. An army helicopter has also been put on standby for rescue works.
